This artwork shows Sultan Baybars in a moment of poised command. The bearing of a man who began life as an enslaved boy sold in a Damascus market and ended it as the most feared ruler in the medieval Middle East.
Baybars was purchased as a Mamluk slave soldier, trained in the elite cavalry of the Ayyubid sultan, and rose through war to become Sultan of Egypt in 1260. That same year he led the Mamluk army to victory over the Mongols at Ain Jalut, the first significant defeat of the Mongol advance and one of the battles that determined the shape of the medieval world. He then spent the rest of his reign dismantling the remaining Crusader states, rebuilding Egypt's postal system, forging alliances across the Islamic world, and governing with a ferocious administrative competence.
He started with nothing. He stopped the Mongols. He built an empire. The story barely needs embellishment.
