This artwork depicts the Dome of the Rock standing at the heart of Jerusalem's Haram al-Sharif. The octagonal shrine built in 691 CE, the oldest surviving Islamic monument in the world.

The Dome of the Rock was commissioned by the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and completed in 72 AH / 691 CE. It was built over the rock from which the Prophet Muhammad ascended during the Night Journey, and stands on the site of the Temple of Solomon. Its golden dome, Byzantine-influenced mosaics, and Quranic inscriptions were deliberate statements, architectural arguments about the place of Islam in the religious history of Jerusalem and the world.

It has stood for thirteen centuries. The inscriptions inside explicitly address the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. It was built to be read as well as seen.
