This artwork depicts the Kaaba at the centre of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. The Sacred House towards which every Muslim on earth turns in prayer, every day.
The Kaaba is the oldest and most sacred site in Islam. Muslims believe it was originally built by Ibrahim and his son Ismail as the first house of monotheistic worship. It has been rebuilt, restored, and surrounded by an ever-expanding mosque across centuries of Islamic history. The black cloth that covers it, the Kiswah, is replaced annually, woven in Saudi Arabia, its Quranic inscriptions worked in gold thread.
This print does not try to be the experience. It tries to hold one aspect of it. The geometry, the light, the scale of a building at the centre of the world.
